Length: Double the Flag’s width

Division: The Flag is divided into 4 rectangular blocs

Bloc 1 (Red): Its width is as long as the Flag itself and is located on the corner adjacent to the flagpole. Its width and height are equivalent to quarter of that of the Flag itself.

Bloc 2-3-4: Located in equal horizontal space, they are of different colors: green (top), white (middle), black (bottom)

The UAE Flag became official on December 1, 1972

The first person to raise the Flag: Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan

Occasion: Unification and creation of the United Arab Emirates

Flag designer: Abdullah Mohammad al-Maaineh, Minister Plenipotentiary at the UAE Foreign Ministry

Story behind the Flag:

According to its designer, the story of the Flag was pure coincidence. It happened when he read an ad calling for designs for the new flag of the united Emirates, posted by the Emir’s Diwan in Abu Dhabi. It was published in the Al-Itihad newspaper that was published in Abu Dhabi, two months before unification. A total of 1030 designs were presented to the competition, and 6 were shortlisted before the final design was finally selected.  

Meaning behind the Flag:

The motivation behind the Flag was the poetry of Safi al-Din al-Hili.
